Interior Design & DIY
Many of us have fallen in love with the trendy neutral decor that is very popular right now. This Canvas wall art DIY is a textured neutral wall decor that is inexpensive and easy to make!
I had this printed canvas that hasn’t been hung up in a long time so, I figured id repurpose it. The size is 38″x28″ and it has a floating gold frame.
You can find inexpensive canvases on Facebook marketplace, at garage sales or even on sale at Michaels!
I applied a coat of white acrylic paint to cover up the old image but, you can also use a primer.
There are plenty of mediums to create texture on a canvas but, I’ve found that the most inexpensive and easy to use is spackle! Please Note: My spackling is pink but dries white. I prefer the white one so you can see your paint colors.
Fill a plastic cup with spackle and add your first color. I prefer to mix the paint in with spackle instead of painting over later to avoid areas with no paint between all the textures. This should be a toothpaste consistency.
Now comes the fun part! Place a big spoonful of spackle onto the canvas and begin creating your texture. Make sure Your spackle isn’t too watery or it may cause cracking later on.
I worked in different corners to allow the spackle to dry before applying another layer.
Get Creative! Use a fork, the back of a spoon, or any tools you can find to make organic textures and patterns. The best part about this is that if you don’t like it, you can add more until it’s perfect!
After creating this, I received many questions about a top coat or sealing my canvas. I did not apply any type of top coat and it has been a few months since I created it. So far I’ve had no issues with cracking or pieces falling off.
If you would like to seal it, Id recommend a matte clear spray paint or brush on a clear coat very gently. Remember this material is used to patch holes in the wall so keep that in mind when finding a top coat.
